The Black Rock St Ives
The Black Rock St Ives is a relatively new restaurant to the town based in the Market Place St Ives. It is open 6 days a week, Monday – Saturday for dinner only. The Black Rock’s menu has an array of mouth-watering dishes from locally sourced produce with a drinks menu to match. The Black Rock St Ives has an early evening menu served between 6pm and 7pm offering 2 courses for £16.50 or 3 courses for 19.50 (prices as of Sept 2013) which is really reasonable for the early bird.
I had not been to try the restaurant as of yet, savouring the likes of Alba or Porthminster Cafe for the nights out my wife and I get. We went along last night and were met with a lovely interior to the restaurant with pottery and sculptures donned on the walls around the dining area. We were greeted by two lovely waitresses who were very accommodating. The drinks menu has a nice wine list with a mix to suit all tastes and food choices and amongst other drinks a selection of locally produced Cornish ales and ciders. My wife opted for a glass of Pinot Grigio while I went for the St Ives Brewery Cornish Lager.
The starter menu has a lovely selection of appetizers and included in that are 3 options of mussels. I opted for the Portuguese option with onion, white wine and chorizo and they were delicious! My wife had the crab claws which she said was the best starter she had tasted for a long while.
St Ives has an abundance of Fish available across its many delightful restaurants but on occasion the carnivore in us comes out as it has recently and last night was no different. I opted for the local Cornish rump steak with homemade chips and wilted greens. My wife went for the pork belly, a personal favourite of mine, which had she not ordered before me I may have gone for it. After all it is customary to try eachothers dishes right?!
I am pleased to say both meals were cooked to perfection, very tasty and served up with a smile from the warm and friendly staff. The Black Rock St Ives has quite a few awards and notability including entry in the good food guide 2013, a certificate of excellence 2012 from Trip Advisor and has won the Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide 3 times in a row. Not only this but the Black Rock St Ives has found its way into the New York Times with a write up!
All in all a wonderful evening with good food in good surroundings and as always good company. What more could you ask for. For reservations call the Black Rock St Ives on 01736 791911 and you can visit their website here.
